How To Start A New Recruit Off Quickly!
by Robert Blackman
There
is a saying in the MLM industry that rings true with everyone you
recruit. You don't have someone sponsored, until you ve help them
sponsor someone. Helping your downline sponsor someone in the first
30 days is a great way to get them off to a fast start. But, does
it guaranteed their success? Certainly not. There are no guarantees
in life or MLM. But, I find that the luckiest people I've met in
MLM seem to be the hardest workers--how about you?
Since there is no guarantee that your new recruit will be successful
then you should focus on doing everything you possibly can do in
order to get them the proper information and tools necessary to
build their MLM. Why is that so important? Because studies have
shown that without this information they will surely FAIL. But,
with it, they have a chance of succeeding.
The
first thing I do when I'm notified that someone has signed up in
one of my National organizations I send out a welcome letter and
samples of recruiting devices like post-cards, mailers, internet
ad sites, cassettes, e-mail marketing system, etc. If you have a
training cassette like I do in my various MLM's, then you can basically
do a "Q&A" session on the tape. People can play and
re-play your answers to the most commonly asked questions about
your MLM. This gives them on-going training whether they are in
their car or sitting at home in front of their computer. I then
call them to answer their questions and help them get started.
Don't
give your new downline prospect Information Overload! I've seen
this problem happen time and again in my programs. Someone sponsors
a bright new recruit and they spend the next 3 evenings talking
them right out of the opportunity! If I knew the first week how
much time and effort it would take to make money in MLM I'd probably
not even joined in the first place! It would have scared me off!
But, what did get me excited was the ability to work hard for a
few years, spending 10 to 20 hours a week in my non-productive time
(like T.V. time!) and then I could replace or even double or triple
my income.
Most
people are scared to death that they made a wrong decision by joining
your MLM. Maybe their spouse saw how much money they spent and they
re already behind on their bills, or maybe they talked to someone
at work and they discouraged them from joining. Whatever the reason
is for being scared they just made a bad decision, don't give them
any ammunition to help confirm their fears! Giving your prospect
too much information early on will have the opposite effect you
think it will--it will make them think, I can never do all that!
When
I first got in MLM I didn't know what it was going to take--and
I didn't want to know EVERYTHING I was going to have to do and put
up with in order to be successful. So, don't make the error of giving
your new prospect TOO much information. Give them information in
PHASES. When I first call a new recruit I usually say, Joe, I'm
sure you have lots of questions, but before we begin, get out a
pen and piece of paper and I'm going to show you how to make an
extra $1,000 to $2,000 a month!
When
I do this I usually answer most of their questions in the process
of showing them how to make an extra grand or two a month! This
process usually begins with how many people they should sponsor
in how many days and about how many people they'll have to call,
mail, or e-mail in order to get there. I give them an estimated
budget that they will need to account for--and this is in addition
to what I'd like to see them spend on the product or service each
month. If you don't know what it's going to take to make and extra
$1,000 a month how in the world are you going to teach it to your
downline? If you don't know, ask your upline. If they don't know,
keep asking until you find an answer. Learn your system, implement
your system and teach your system!
After
I've explained this process I say, Now, Joe, do you have any questions?
I only answer the questions that they ask me. I don't try to impress
them with all my knowledge and talk their ear off for two hours.
Instead, I answer the questions that are on their mind TODAY!
Next
week, once they've digested what we've talked about today, they'll
probably have even more questions. Then I'll answer those at that
time and so forth. If you had told me back in 1984 that after graduating
from college that my parents printing business would go bankrupt
and that I'd lose $30,000 in the process I'd probably would of thought
twice before going back home!
But,
without that valuable experience I wouldn't be the man I am today.
Those experiences helped me get to a new level--a level of understanding
that has propelled me to the financial status I have today.
Do
I know everything there is to know about printing and MLM? NO WAY!
I'm still learning everyday. I still ask my sponsor questions about
our program every day. You learn by DOING. The questions I ask today
are much more in depth than the questions I asked my first week
in MLM. Why? Because I know more--I've experienced more because
I've talked to more people, addressed more and different objections.
I've become more knowledgeable about MLM by experiencing FAILURE!
Taking a lot of "NO'S" has one advantage--YOU learn!
So,
don't expect your new recruit to want to know everything there is
to know about MLM in one week. They're not ready for that. Instead,
show them the ropes to make an extra thousand or two, then sit back
and say, Do you have any questions? Answer them. Then give them
one or two directives and schedule another meeting or phone call
and get off the phone or out of their house before they feel like
THROWING YOU OUT!
Determine
what level of interest your new prospect wants to take. Find out
their budget and give them directives in that area. If they say
they have $10 a month and 2 extra hours a week to spend on their
new MLM venture, yet they want to make $10,000 a month by the end
of the year, you might have to break the news to them that You're
Not Going To Make It! Wrong expectations is a big reason why people
fail in MLM. If you can set them straight in the first 30 days you
can save them and yourself a lot of wasted time. Maybe that person
needs to call the company and get their money back--ever think of
that?
If
I talk to someone in my downline and they say they want to make
$10,000 a month I say it's possible, but what are they willing to
do and to give up in order to make $10,000 a month? If that doesn't
MATCH with what I know it's going to take to make $10,000 a month,
then I tell them so--carefully! I might say, Joe, it sounds like
with your time schedule and financial commitment that you might
want to set your first goal at making an extra $500 a month. Then,
once you've reached that goal, I'll show you how to make $1,000
and so on, until we reach your ultimate goal of $10,000 a month.
Don't
burst your new downlines bubble. Instead, give them a realistic
goal to go after and tell them what they need to do in order to
reach it.
I constantly
have downline members who tell me they want to make extra money,
yet they take no action towards reaching their goal! Are they bad
people? No! They just aren't willing to commit right now to do the
things necessary to make money. You must create an environment that
allows these people to incubate . If you raised your voice at these
people or called them deadbeats, then what do you think they'll
do when they hang up the phone? You're right, NOTHING! They'll probably
hang up and think, I'm not going to make that "S.O.B."
a dime! And they promptly drop out.
I'm
not suggesting that you turn into a nurse maid for everyone who
calls you. You don't have time for that. But, for goodness sakes,
treat EVERYONE you talk to like they might be the next person who
becomes your best friend and makes you an extra half million dollars
over your lifetime.
